The Community Alliance for the Environment (CAFE) is a coalition in North Brooklyn which includes El Puente, the United Jewish Organizations (UJO) and the Polish & Slavic Center (PSC). All three organizations were participants in the Childhood Asthma Initiative of the New York City Department of Health and all three were concerned over the many environmental threats that plague North Brooklyn. In 1999 CIET provided support for the design and analysis of a “passer-by” survey by PSC in the Greenpoint section of Brooklyn. Some 230 asthma sufferers, Polish-American and Latino, were identified and asked questions about health insurance and asthma management. The results provided PSC with an evidence base for the design of the second and subsequent years of its asthma program.
