El Puente is a community learning and development institution in the predominantly Latino "Southside" of Williamsburg, Brooklyn, founded in 1982. Its programs in health, education and the arts promote holistic youth and community development for democracy, healing and other human rights, with community learning at the core. In 1993, El Puente Academy for Peace and Justice was founded as a community-controlled public high school for human rights and community development. From 1995 to 2003 CIET supported El Puente to build up its own evidence-gathering capacity and to bring the evidence to bear on both its work for community health and environmental justice and its science curriculum.

The CIET-El Puente partnership was the subject of the lead editorial in the December 1999 issue of the American Journal of Public Health entitled "Building International Public Health Vision Through Local Community Research: The El Puente–CIET Partnership." (Am J Public Health 1999; 89(12)). See also Jason Corburn, Street Science: Community Knowledge and Environmental Health Justice. MIT Press, 2005: 111-144.
